What Are Pediatric Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a custom-fitted cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth. When a baby tooth has extensive decay, a large break, or structural weakness, a filling alone may not be enough to hold it together. A crown wraps around the tooth completely, restoring its shape, strength, and function.

Pediatric crowns are specifically designed for children’s smaller teeth. They are placed in a single visit and allow your child to chew, talk, and smile with confidence while the baby tooth continues to do its important job of holding space for the permanent tooth underneath.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Numbing & Comfort

We gently numb the tooth and surrounding gum tissue so your child stays comfortable. Any decayed or damaged portions of the tooth are carefully removed, and the tooth is shaped so the crown fits snugly.

Crown Selection & Placement

We choose a pre-formed crown that matches the size and shape of your child's tooth. The crown is placed over the prepared tooth and secured with dental cement for a lasting hold.

Fit Check & Aftercare

We make sure the crown feels comfortable and that your child can bite down normally. Your child may feel some numbness for an hour or two afterward, but there is usually little to no discomfort once it wears off.

Gentle Cavity Treatment Your Child Can Feel Good About

Our office is designed for kids. From the waiting room to the treatment chair, everything is built to make your child feel comfortable. We take our time, explain each step in kid-friendly language, and make sure your child feels safe throughout the entire filling process.

Types of Pediatric Crowns & Common Situations

We offer several options depending on the tooth location and your family's preferences.

Stainless Steel Crowns

The most common and durable option for back teeth. Pre-formed, cost-effective, and hold up extremely well to the forces of chewing.

Large Cavities

When decay has affected a significant portion of the tooth, there may not be enough healthy structure left to support a filling.

After a Pulpotomy

Teeth that have undergone nerve treatment are more fragile and need the added protection of a full-coverage crown.

Broken or Weak Teeth

A crown can restore a tooth that has chipped or cracked due to injury, or protect teeth with enamel defects that did not form properly.

Common Questions About Dental Sealants

Answers from our board-certified pediatric dentists.

Does getting a filling hurt
We use a gentle numbing process that starts with a flavored topical gel. Most children report only feeling a small pinch when the numbing medicine goes in. Once the area is numb, your child should not feel any pain during the filling. Our pediatric dentists are specially trained to work with children and make the experience as comfortable as possible.
Composite fillings typically last 5 to 10 years or longer with proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits. For baby teeth, fillings only need to last until the tooth naturally falls out, which can be anywhere from a few months to several years depending on your child’s age.
Yes. Composite fillings are fully hardened before your child leaves the office, so they can technically eat right away. However, we recommend waiting until the numbness wears off (usually 1-2 hours) before eating a full meal to prevent accidental biting of the lip or cheek. Soft foods are best for the first few hours.
Yes. Baby teeth play a critical role in your child’s development. They hold space for permanent teeth, help with proper speech development, and are essential for chewing. Untreated cavities in baby teeth can cause pain, infection, and even damage the permanent teeth developing underneath. A filling stops the decay and protects your child’s oral health.
