When Should My Baby First See a Dentist?

Not only did they make this very first experience wonderful and seamless, they went the extra mile to ensure my daughter felt 100% comfortable. They addressed every pause/ question/ and bit of insight she had to share with them which made her feel seen. This was all while helping her get comfortable with each tool and next step in the process. My mama nerves were handled with just the same amount of care and before we knew it we were done! My daughter hasn’t stopped asking to go back to see her friends at JSOS and we will absolutely recommend them to our friends. We’ve been bringing our boys here since we moved to the area three years ago, and every single visit has been a wonderful experience. The staff is always kind, patient, and truly caring with kids. A special thank you to Ms. Adela and Brandi at the front desk, who these past weeks went above and beyond to make sure our son was able to be seen sooner rather than later. Their willingness to help and their genuine concern made a stressful situation so much easier for our family. Each time we visit, our boys walk out feeling well taken care of and most importantly, smiling! It’s clear that everyone here truly cares about their patients and families. Is it really necessary to see a dentist at age 1?

Yes. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association both recommend a first visit by age 1. Early visits help us catch issues like decay before they progress and establish a comfortable relationship with the dentist.

How do you examine a baby?

Your baby sits on your lap facing you, then leans back into the dentist’s lap. It is a quick, gentle exam called a “knee-to-knee” technique. Most babies do great with it.

What if my baby does not have any teeth yet?

We still recommend a visit. We check gum health, jaw development, and screen for potential issues. We also provide important guidance on feeding and oral hygiene habits.

How do I clean my baby's gums before teeth come in?

Wipe your baby’s gums gently with a soft, damp cloth or infant gum brush after feedings. Once teeth appear, use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) on a soft infant toothbrush.
